I got back from South Tyrol last night - it was
fabulous! I have never really been anywhere like it, a wonderful combination of Mediterranean landscape and the Alps. South Tyrol was originally part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and then annexed to Italy at the end of World War I. Today it is an autonomous province of Italy but remains a fascinating blend of two cultures that, as the South Tyroleans I met pointed out, is actually a culture all of its own. It was weird yet so wonderful to be in this truly breathtaking part of Italy, drinking great wine and stocking up on the
aceto balsamico again, and yet eating dumplings and speaking German!
