books for the soul: B by sarah kay

Thank you for the incredible supportive comments on yesterday's post.

Thank you to the brave men and women who contacted me to share their own stories.

Thank you for reminding me why and giving me a reason to still keep this space alive, nearly eight years on, just when I think I've said all I can say.

Today, I thought I'd just share another book for the soul.  This wonderful book that you can read in one sitting with your cup of tea:

It's a poem called B, by Sarah Kay.  Just one poem, published in a beautiful hardback slender blue book.

It was given to me last year by a wonderful and inspiring friend and reading it always makes me think of her.

After reading it, I wanted to find out more about Sarah Kay who is an incredible young woman - if I were the type to use the phrase "girl crush" it would apply here! She is an American poet, known for her performance poetry and championing the spoken word.  She teaches poetry and self expression to children and young people across the US and has performed her work all over the world. She absolutely commands your attention with her voice and words.  Her TED talk, particularly the poem she performs at the end, had me in tears:

She performs "B" as part of the talk, actually! If you've never watched this talk, I thoroughly recommend it.  It's part of my "inspiration toolbox" :)

It's even more wonderful reading it on paper, with utterly sumptuous illustrations by Sophia Janowitz. You'll feel uplifted and far less alone after reading it.

There is hurt here
that cannot be fixed
by Band-Aids or poetry.

So the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman
isn't coming, I'll make sure she knows
she doesn't have to wear the cape all by herself.

from B by Sarah Kay

Once again, thank you for reminding me I don't need to wear the cape all by myself.

Have you read a good book lately? :)
